Poetry workshop write-up

It was lovely to welcome Khadijah to our group tonight and hear her wonderful poems, hope you enjoyed writing them as much as we enjoyed listening to them Khadijah.

Our first exercise was all about flying, and the transition from being Earth-bound and then finding yourself soaring up and away to freedom. This produced some great writing: we had dreams of flight, flying humans, seeds being lifted on the wind and then how it feels when you’re physically held up there by an aeroplane. It was also really interesting to realise that most of us have had prominent dreams about being able to fly!

Tonight we did something entirely different for our second exercise, drawing inspiration from a picture: Little girl ballet dancer by Tatiana Ilina. I was delighted to discover that it worked quite similarly to our writing to music sessions, with the picture evoking mirrored reactions for our poets. This time it was the sense of anticipation which was picked up by everyone, and also the concept of there being two different worlds, with a moment of transition (caught in that anticipation) between the two. Even with these comparable reactions the poems were all totally unique. Our group all enjoyed this so we’ll definitely be doing it again.

We’re having a week off from workshops now since half term is here once more, but we’ll be back and raring to go on the 10th June – plus we will all be meeting up next week (5th June) for Robin Sullivan’s Night of the Nine Stones where we’re going to perform a selection of our poems in front of a live audience! HOORAY! You can find out more information about it here:
